COLUMBUS — Four Trumbull County fire departments and one from Mahoning are among the 57 recipients of Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry grants.

Departments across Ohio received $394,274 through the Volunteer Fire Assistance grant program.

“We are pleased to be able to provide funding to local volunteer fire departments for the acquisition of upgraded firefighting equipment,” Dan Balser, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry, said. “In addition to the training we provide, this equipment will increase the efficiency of our front-line partners in wildfire prevention and suppression.”

In Trumbull County, the Brookfield Fire Department received $10,000, which will go toward the purchase of a utility terrain vehicle, a slip-on unit, trailer and other tools. A slip-on unit is a skid-mounted, firefighting unit portable via vehicle to ensure rapid response.

Johnston’s volunteer firefighters received $7,051 to help purchase wildfire personal protective equipment as well as suppression tools; Mecca volunteers received $9,672 to help buy a slip-on unit; while Fowler volunteers will get $4,013 toward the purchase of wildfire personal protective equipment as well as a multiagency radio communication system.

In Mahoning County, Coitsville firefighters will get $9,122 toward the purchase of a slip-on unit as well as a tool rack.

VFA grants may fund up to 50 percent of the project cost, not to exceed $10,000.

Many rural fire departments in Ohio have tight budgets, and most of their limited resources must be focused on absolute essentials for keeping emergency services up and running. ODNR Forestry’s VFA grant program helps supplement fire department budgets and facilitates important purchases such as firefighter personal protective equipment and basic fire suppression equipment.
