New event announced as results are reported for Porsche-memorabilia sale

RM Sotheby’s has added another Online Only auction to its summer calendar, with Open Roads, North America going up for bidding July 23-30 with about 80 collector cars from which to choose.

“The Open Roads, North America auction lineup spans the collector car market, ranging from American Classics to modern sports and supercars, with early highlights led by a nicely optioned 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG,” RM Sotheby’s says in a news release.

The gullwing-door Mercedes AMG sports coupe is a supercar by any standard, powered by a hand-assembled 563-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8 engine that was known as the most powerful naturally aspirated production engine in the world when it debuted.  The coupe is capable of a zero-60 time 3.5 seconds.

The pre-auction estimate for the Mercedes is $140,000 to $160,000.

Another featured car is a 1937 Packard Six wood-bodied station wagon by Baker-Raulang, valued at $90,000 to $110,000.

The announcement of the Canadian auction company’s Online Only collector car sale, held virtually because of the coronavirus threat, comes as RM Sotheby’s reports the results of its most-recent Only Online automobilia sale of all-Porsche memorabilia from a single collection.

Online Only: A Lifetime of Porsche Memorabilia, Part I achieved strong results, the company says, with $161,994 in sales of collector items, literature, toys and other items related to classic Porsche models.

The top sale was for a 1948-55 Porsche 356 Pre-A banjo steering wheel with original Bakelite-backed horn button, a very early piece that sold for $4,320, essentially double its pre-auction estimate (all reported results include auction fees).

The second-highest sale was for a vintage remote-control Porsche 356, one of several offered, this one in pristine condition with its original box and all accessories reaching $3,600.

RM Sotheby’s has scheduled Part II of the all-Porsche memorabilia auction for July 21-29.

The top-10 highest sellers for the Porsche memorabilia auction were:
